My Understanding of the Fair Tax Opposed to the Flat Tax

Let us first understand that at no time, ever, is the government going to suffer from a reduction of money from the people. Golfing jaunts do not come cheap.

Now, as I understand it the Flat Tax means everyone pays the same percentage of their income to the government. And so the high wage earner pays more than the low wage earner. Whereas the Fair Tax is a tax on what you buy, like a sales tax, wherein a rich man might pay the same number of dollars to the feds as the Hobo hitchhiker because this year he purchased the same amount and kind of consumer products.

To those of us who pay a sales tax at the grocery store and also pay a percentage of our yearly income it seems obvious that the so called Fair Tax/Sales Tax would have to increase our old sales tax many multiples to equal what we used to pay in income taxes

It seems that so-called fair tax must considerably increase the total amount that all low and middle wage earners would have to pay while reducing what the rich pay.
