The GOP Has It Wrong This Time

Here’s a case where the GOP has it wrong. Yes, they want to get back on a stable financial footing and that’s good; but they will not bear ANY of the brunt of that task. No taxes from me, they say. Let those who pay no taxes start throwing a few shekels into the pot also. Don’t raise my taxes they say, because I’m brilliant and when you allow me to make more money than King Midas ever saw; what dribbles off the edge of my table will be enough to feed the peasants. Let them eat cake! Let them get a job for God’s sake!

They are riding the crest of a completely bankrupt philosophy and a temporary tax cut that was supposed to expire years ago, but they now are unwilling to give it up. They consistently refer to this planned correction as an unfair tax increase. These American citizens who don’t pay taxes don’t make enough money to be eligible to pay taxes under the present tax code. They may be the ones who are too old and decrepit to work any longer. They are the ones who have lost their jobs and their homes. They are the ones drifting toward homelessness by the tens of thousands. They may be the ones driven from the work force by NAFTA. You remember NAFTA; this was the open free world trade agreement that started the flood of jobs away from our borders. Free world trade experienced will eventually average out the wages of working people throughout the entire world. This means that the highly paid American workers salary would eventually have to drift toward the average world wide wage and that means that our wages will effectively sink to a point half way between our $20 per hour average wage and the Bangladesh worker’s $3 per day paycheck. Gee what could go wrong there?
